Yacht Basics

Yachts or more correctly yachting is a very popular form of boating. Yachts come in two ways. Sailing yachts or yachts powered by motors. Yachts have gone from basic designs to having some of the most decadent luxury you could imagine.

Yachts start in lengths of about 30 feet and of course can reach hundreds of feet in length. You have seen plenty of mega yachts on tv. Some of those reach lengths of 200 feet.

Yachts were created firstly by the dutch to catch pirates. A famous king once used a yacht as his preferred way to travel across the ocean and since then they became more widely used.

At the beginning of the last century, yachts were typically made of steel and sometimes wood. Now more flexible and lighter materials are used. Fiberglass being the main material used. Steel is still used quite a bit as is aluminum. Wood is still used by those who craft their own yachts for personal use.

Some of the different types of yachts are... day sailing yachts. These usually do not have any sort of cabin or sleeping quarters and are designed for sailing during the day and then going home. The next yacht after that is of course the over night yacht or the weekender. They have very small cabin space and even a kitchen.

If you have the money, cruising yachts come next. These usually can accommodate a family and have a handful of cabins below the deck of the boat. These yachts can be piloted for very long distances.

The big boy is next. The luxury or mega yacht. The smaller of these tend to be around 80 feet in length. They have spacious cabins and ore amenities then any other yacht. These types of yachts need a crew of people to run.

Then there is of course the racing yacht used for sporting purposes. These are the high speed yachts and are for the serious sailor, reaching over 30 knots in speed.
