Tacking

When someone says tacking, they mean to bring the sailboat to a course change by bringing the bow of the sailboat directly into the current of the wind. Getting the boat into a position thats directly upwind of the current position the sailboat is in.

Now, the boat has changed one tack and the helmsman will pass the bow through what is called the eye of the wind and the sails will be on the other side. It takes some co-ordination, skill and training to do.

Remember when tacking that, the helmsman and any crew should stay out of the way of any lines that they may get tangled in. This can cause serious injury and even cause the boat to flip over.

You should also make sure you have enough speed before you tack. It's crucial you have enough speed before the tack takes place. The helmsman will then move the tiller to change the direction of the boat.

When the boat starts moving towards the win, the crew members will then release what is called the Jib sheet. This is the simplest of sailing skills, but its vital to know and it takes practice to perfect. Knowing exactly when the right time to tack is vital.
