Sea Sickness

The cause of sea sickness is of course the movement of the water. This is why its considered a form of motion sickness. It unbalances you by impacting the middle ear. What happens is that if your eyes are seeing something and the movement of the sea is telling your inner ear something else, this is when you start to get sick.

Basically if what your eyes are seeing doesn't correctly match up to what your inner ear is feeling, you get sea sickness. This usually happens when the swell is large or if you look down a lot.

Now the best non medical way to cure sea sickness is to stop looking down and look out into the distance. Keep your eyes looking straight ahead and this will help with the balance between your eyes and ears. Sea sickness tablets do work for most people, but be sure to take them before heading off and don't drink too much the night before. Ginger and ginger tablets work for me, but others say it does nothing for them.

The best way to avoid sea sickness is to stay in the fresh air and look straight ahead. The stern of the boat is usually where the least amount of motion happens, so if you can sit up there. Sea sickness funny enough happens at its worse when the boat is stationary and rocking. Try and not get on the boat until its ready to launch.

Now if you happen to get sea sick after doing all of the above, try and stay away from others who are also sick. Keep drinking lots of water, but it small quantities and often. Don't guzzle. If you do, you will bring it up and you will become even more dehydrated. If it gets too bad you will have to go back on shore.
