Sailing Schools

Sailing schools are the ideal way to learn the skills involved in sailing. While it is true that you can learn to sail with the help of an experienced teacher in an informal setting, many people have in fact traditionally learned how to sail in this manner.

Sailing schools can provide you with a thorough grounding in both the practical applications as well as the theory involved. This way you can be better prepared to deal with any eventuality when it comes up.

The good news is that virtually anyone from adolescence and above can learn how to sail. You do not have to be particularly strong to do it either. In fact many older people have taken up sailing fairly late in their lives, become successful at it and have enjoyed it immensely.

You do not even have to be good driver! All that is necessary is a healthy interest in the craft and solid training. The former is up to you; sailing schools will provide the latter.

The length of sailing school courses can range from as short as 3 days to several weeks for more intensive training. Some establishments will offer “quick” courses that last only two days or even less. You would do well to avoid these courses as they may give you an introductory exposure to the basics of sailing, and perhaps even get you into the water right away, but this is far too little time to get into the many important facets of sailing in depth.

When you enroll in a sailing school, you can expect to go through several hours of classroom instruction first before you even go near the water. Sailing is as much about theory and knowledge in the fundamentals as physical skill, maybe even more so and this is reflected in the amount of classroom instruction that you will receive. Of course once you have the theory down, nothing can substitute for actual real world experience out in the ocean, so any reputable sailing school will feature plenty of time on the water as well.

The most important question that you should ask when shopping around for a sailing school is whether they are certified or not. This will ensure that the instruction you will receive is top notch and that all your safety concerns will be addressed adequately. Sailing is on the whole a safe enough activity, but enrolling in a reputable sailing school will make it an even safer and more rewarding experience.
